Tail End of Manitoba Harvest Remains Slow

Oct 18, 2023

The Manitoba harvest made just minor progress again this past week as damp and cloudy conditions slowed late-season fieldwork in some areas.

Tuesday’s weekly crop report pegged the overall Manitoba harvest at 90% complete, up just 4 points from a week earlier. The harvest has now gained only 5 points over the past two weeks after rapid progress earlier in the harvest season.

Harvest has wrapped up for most of the spring cereal crops, with 94% of the canola now in the bin, along with 54% of the flax.

Most of the grain corn has reached maturity. The provincewide corn harvest is estimated at about 23% complete but is about half finished in the Central Region. Soybeans are mostly in the R8 growth stage, with harvest progress at 81% provincially. Yields have been variable and dependent on summer rainfall, ranging from 20 to 30 bu/acre on the earliest harvested fields to 30 to 40 bu/acre on fields harvested over the last week.
