Spring Wheat Acres Down from Intentions; All Wheat Area Still Up from Last Year

Canadian all wheat acres are down from earlier expectations, although still above last year, as producers cut back on spring wheat. 

Friday’s Statistics Canada acreage report pegged national all wheat area for 2025 at 26.925 million acres. That is down from StatsCan’s March estimate of 27.475 million and now just 1% above last year.  

The entire decline in all wheat acres from March intentions was due to spring wheat, with planted area falling about 612,000 acres to 18.808 million acres - down 0.7% from 18.942 million in 2024. On the other hand, today’s report put durum area at 6.531 million acres, up from intentions of 6.366 million and 2.6% higher on the year. National winter wheat area (remaining), at 1.584 million acres, is up 18.2% compared to 2024. 

The spring wheat number fell short of the average trade guess of 19.2 million, while durum topped the average trade guess of 6.3 million. 

In Saskatchewan, farmers reported 14.018 million total acres of wheat in 2025, down from March intentions of 14.178 million and 1.1% below 2024. Spring wheat area in the province, at 8.773 million acres, fell from 8.901 million in March and is down 2.1% from last year. Saskatchewan durum area is now estimated at 5.118 million acres, versus 5.147 million in March and 5.115 million last year. 

Farmers in Alberta reported all wheat area at 8.064 million acres, down from intentions of 8.37 million and 3.2% higher on the year. Alberta durum area, at 1.327 million acres, showed a notable increase from 1.179 million acres in March and is now 11.6% above last year’s 1.189 million acres. Spring wheat area was reported at 6.524 million acres, compared to intentions of 6.99 million and 6.473 million a year ago. 

Manitoba producers reported total wheat seeded area for 2025 at 3.301 million acres, up from 3.278 million in March and a 1.9% increase from last year. 

All wheat area in Ontario is estimated at 1.207 million acres, relatively little changed from 1.243 million in March but up more than 16% from last year. Spring wheat area in the province is now estimated at 62,800 acres, up sharply from 47,300 in March but still below 65,100 last year. Winter wheat (remaining) area in the province, at 1.12 million acres, compares to 958,000 in 2024.
