We could see a few storms pop up over the next few days, but believe it or not, there's already been hail damage to some crops here in Alberta.
Bruce Lowe, the CEO of Ag Direct Hail explains what is happening in the province. "Literally we had a customer buy and two days later, they filed a claim and then I had that heart breaking call that I hate. The call from a customer who didn't quite put his coverage (on) on time and had a hail storm. We are going to try to see if we can figure out a way we can help him out and get out there and assess the damage."
Lowe reminds farmers to make sure you have your acres covered. "I got to remind farmers, typically most companies don't insure hailed crops. Don't get caught short because there is nothing worse than getting that phone call to say 'Bruce can you help me out, here is what happened.' Probably my least favourite call."
Many farmers have had a late seeding season and it is affecting some from getting hail coverage. "What we are seeing is the late seeding has resulted in late hail coverage," comments Lowe. "It is interesting how delayed it is. We're probably about two weeks behind, right across the Prairies, as far as the development stage of the crops. Certainly, we are going to play catch up quickly. I'm hearing right across the Prairies, the moisture content is pretty good. I'm encouraged. I like what I'm hearing from our customers about where there crops are looking, this early in the year."
