Seeding Nears Completion, But Moisture Concerns Loom

Seeding for major crops in Alberta is almost done, according to the latest crop report. As of this week, provincial seeding progress has hit 90%, up sharply from 72% the week prior. That puts farmers well ahead of the 5-year average of 81%, and on track to wrap things up sooner than usual.

Across the province, all regions are ahead of schedule:

• South: 97% complete
• North West: 93%
• Central: 89%
• North East: 86%
• Peace: 84%

Emergence Off to a Strong Start

Warm conditions are helping push crop emergence, which now stands at 57% across the province—up from just 31% last week. That’s also well above the 5-year average of 37%. The Central and Peace regions lead the way, with emergence at 65% and 64% respectively.

Dry peas are nearly done emerging at 99%, while oats trail behind at 74%.

Moisture Levels Dropping

Despite the fast start, declining moisture is becoming a growing concern. Windy, warm weather has rapidly dried out the topsoil in many areas. Both surface and sub-surface moisture levels are now trending below average across most regions.
