South Dakota State University Extension will host a scouting session for corn and soybean diseases confirmed in the state.
If you have been wondering what you’re seeing in your corn or soybean fields this season, join the SDSU Extension plant pathology team in Volga to see tar spot in the corn field and white mold in the soybean field, or to have your own diseased plant material identified.
The Corn and Soybean Disease Scouting Session is from 9 a.m. to noon CDT on Oct. 3, 2024, at the SDSU research farm at 21254 464th Ave., Volga. Registration is not required for this free event. Attendees can come and go any time during the event.
“Come along and scout the field with us,” said Connie Strunk, SDSU Extension Plant Pathology Field Specialist. “Stay as long as your schedule allows.”
Tar spot is a potentially yield-impacting corn disease that has been confirmed in 41 South Dakota counties this growing season, most recently at the Volga Farm. White mold is a fungal disease that can cause severe yield losses.
Anyone who suspects they have tar spot can take a sample to the scouting session for identification. Please keep samples enclosed in a plastic bag with a dry paper towel.
