Premier Danielle Smith leads trade mission to boost agricultural exports to Mexico

Premier Danielle Smith has embarked on a crucial trade mission to Mexico, with a primary focus on expanding Alberta’s agricultural exports and fostering new investments in the agriculture sector.

This visit marks the first time an Alberta Premier has visited Mexico since 2019, highlighting the importance of agriculture in strengthening bilateral trade relations.

Mexico is one of Alberta’s fastest-growing export markets, and in 2024, Alberta's agricultural exports to Mexico totaled over C$785 million, including key products like meat, oil seed, and cereals. This mission aims to identify new opportunities to expand these exports while strengthening Alberta’s position in Mexico's growing agrifood market.

During the visit, Premier Smith has been meeting with government officials, private sector leaders, and industry representatives to explore potential synergies in agriculture, including innovations in agrifood, sustainable farming practices, and food security initiatives. The meetings will also cover ways to attract more investment into Alberta's agricultural industry, positioning the province as a global leader in sustainable agriculture.

“Alberta’s government has made a commitment to Albertans that we will pursue new opportunities, diversify our markets and secure new trade and investment ties around the globe, and my mission to Mexico is this commitment in action,” said Danielle Smith, Premier of Alberta before she embarked on the trip.

“Mexico is a valued trading partner, ally and long-time friend to our province that understands just as well as we do that by working together, we have an opportunity to generate jobs, stability and prosperity for our people. While in Mexico, I intend to build new relationships and strengthen existing ones to do just that.”

Alberta’s agricultural strengths, from livestock to crop production, are being showcased, with Premier Smith highlighting the province’s commitment to quality, sustainability, and innovation in agrifood. This trade mission is working to lay the groundwork for new deals and further solidify Alberta’s agricultural exports in the Mexican market.

This visit is part of Alberta’s broader strategy to diversify markets and ensure the continued growth of its agriculture sector through expanded trade and investment partnerships with key international allies like Mexico.
