Saskatchewan cattle farm numbers are down 12-percent over the last five years and the livestock industry is taking some steps to change the trend.
Saskatchewan Cattlemens CEO Ryder Lee says is not surprised by the decline, pointing to years of farm consolodation in this province.
Stock Growers president Shane Jahnke says the census also shows the average age of farmers is rising and now is 55-years.
He says a mentorship program has been started to turn the numbers around.
“We’re hoping to get more youth involved in agriculture,” said Jahnke. “We’re telling them to stay on the ranch and take over for mom and dad.”
