Revolutionary Solution to Equine Respiratory Health Problems

Aug 04, 2014

Rockwood, ON – Introducing HAYGAIN hay steamers at System Fencing–a revolutionary product in the equine industry that is helping to remedy the widespread problem of dust and mold spores in dry hay.

“Adding the HAYGAIN to our product line is a great addition for us” states Dwayne Job, President of System Fencing. “We are constantly searching for products that will serve the equine community and better the lives of our equine partners; we feel that the HAYGAIN fits these requirements.”

Allergens, such as dust and mold spores found in hay, lead to airway inflammation, bronchoconstriction, accumulation of mucus, and can induce Recurrent Airway Obstruction (RAO), also known as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), and Inflammatory Airway Disease (IAD).

“Allergy horses have shown success with reduced clinical signs and decreased medical management from previous years and the only change in their treatment plan has been a HAYGAIN unit,” states Dr. Chad Davis, REACH Clinic Veterinarian of Boyce, Virginia.

Other methods of removing dust from hay are less effective and can result in harmful by-products. Soaking hay in cold water reduces the nutritive content through leaching and can produce contaminated waste liquid.

“Before I was introduced to HAYGAIN, I was soaking hay for Brentina to make sure that it was more palatable and dust free. After her colic surgery, we were encouraged to do so,” says Debbie McDonald, 2-Time Dressage Olympian from Hailey, Idaho. “I also was aware that it was taking all of the important nutrients out but did not know what else to do. Then I found HAYGAIN and not just Brentina but every horse in our barn is so happy.  Now after our horses are fed the only sound you hear are the horses chewing. I no longer hear sneezing or coughing due to dust or mold spores. Once you have fed HAYGAIN you will never go back. Not to mention how wonderful it smells while it is steaming!”

HAYGAIN is the revolutionary steaming system that transforms hay into dust-free forage, giving horses a healthier respiratory system and maximizing their performance. Only HAYGAIN ensures steaming the hay to temperatures in excess of 212 degrees Fahrenheit to kill all harmful fungal spores, mites and other organisms, effectively sterilizing while maintaining the hay’s nutritional value.

HAYGAIN also helps to rehydrate the horse by adding ¾ gallon of absorbed water to the full bale in the steaming process. Steamed hay, therefore, makes for sweeter and more palatable forage for the horse that is easier to chew and digest.

This concept has been researched and extensively tested at The Royal Agricultural College, Cirencester, England. Dr. Meriel Moore-Colyer, a leading researcher in equine nutrition, led the research, which consistently proved that the HAYGAIN hay steamer kills harmful spores found in hay, in effect, sterilizing it. The number of colonies of spores grown from 1 gram of untreated, good quality, dry hay on a microbial media was 7.775 million. HAYGAIN reduced it to essentially zero, P<0.008 to be exact.
