Provincial Agriculture Minister Lyle Stewart is back at home after attending the Tri-National Accord Meetings last week.
Stewart says staff kept him updated on the wildfire situation back home.
He says recovery is now underway noting the latest total for the loss of livestock is at 770 animals and that is still expected to increase.
"Through the R.M.'s were are providing funds to cover the cost of the disposal of these dead animals in a safe and secure fashion that's being supervised by veterinarians," he said. "Disease can spread if carcasses are laying around for extended periods of time, so we're covering the cost of that."
Stewart says they’ve had requests coming in for assistance with the loss of livestock - noting that’s still being evaluated.
"In the past, we haven't done that or triggered AgriRecovery to cover insurable losses which of course livestock are," he said. "That's not to say this isn't very difficult, but I also restate that we're still evaluating but that has been our practice in the past. We recognize that these are devastating loses financially and emotionally for the producers involved."
Farms and ranches in the path of the fires lost livestock, hay, pasture, fences, buildings, stored grain and more.
