PROVINCE SEEKING FEEDBACK ON PROPOSED ANIMAL CARE REGULATION

Feb 23, 2023

Manitoba Agriculture is beginning a 45-day consultation period today on proposed amendments to the Animal Care Regulation to modernize animal care by incorporating Canada’s Accredited Zoos and Aquariums (CAZA) into the regulation.

The proposed amendments would recognize CAZA’s accreditation standards of 2022 as the animal welfare standard for zoological facilities in Manitoba. CAZA is a private charitable organization representing the country’s leading zoological parks and aquariums, whose members are committed to the advancement of animal welfare, conservation, science and education. Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg is a CAZA-accredited facility that follows CAZA’s qualitative performance standards.

The amendments to the regulation would also remove detailed reporting requirements for animal markets and assembling stations. These amendments would reduce redundancies in the regulatory framework that is guided by the Animal Care Act.

Manitobans are invited to provide feedback on the proposed amendments through the Manitoba Regulatory Consultation Portal at https://reg.gov.mb.ca/home. The deadline for submissions is April 3.
