Four of Alberta’s crop commissions – Alberta Barley, Alberta Canola, Alberta Pulse Growers, and the Alberta Wheat Commission – have launched a new educational offering to the Project Agriculture program with a focus on the crop sector. The new modules will complement the existing Project Agriculture platform and align with junior high social studies and science topics.
Originally designed and implemented by Alberta Milk, Egg Famers of Alberta, Alberta Chicken Producers, Alberta Turkey Producers and Alberta Hatching Eggs Producers, Project Agriculture is a free online education program for teachers and students aligned with Alberta curriculum and offering classroom activities, original videos profiling Alberta farmers and Alberta and agriculture-specific information for students from grades 7 to 12.
The new additions to the website include Agriculture Histories for grade 7 Social Studies, Sustainable Practices and Food Diversity for grades 7 and 8 Science curriculums. The program allows students and teachers the flexibility to use a project-based approach or implement short and focused activities that bring Alberta’s robust agriculture sector to the forefront of the classroom.
Thanks to funding from the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta through the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, Project Agriculture was able to expand to encompass more educational topics and sectors in agriculture, including crops.
Current promotion of the program is underway with presentations at various teacher conferences and professional development sessions through regional consortia.
