Ottawa Watching Situation At Port Of Montreal

Mar 30, 2021
There's a lot of concern in the grain sector over a proposed strike at the Port of Montreal.

A majority of unionized port longshoremen recently voted to reject the final offer on a collective agreement.

The move follows what had been a seven-month truce between workers and their employer.

Back in August 2020, Longshoremen walked off the job but since agreeing to the truce work had continued  as usual.

The port handles around 40 million tonnes of goods each year.

The agriculture sector has been calling on Ottawa to step in and intervene in the situation.

Federal Agriculture Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau says they're following the situation very closely.

"We know it could have a major impact on the ag sector, but also on the economy as a whole. We have brought to the table three mediators. So we are really doing everything we can to bring the two parties together and push them to find a negotiated agreement."

The Port of Montreal is Canada’s second largest port handling a wide variety of cargo including agricultural goods and products.
