The Ontario winter wheat harvest is beginning to advance east and north from the deep southwest but remains in its early stages overall.
The latest update from the Grain Farmers of Ontario (GFO) estimated the provincial harvest at 11% complete as of July 16, up from just 1% the previous week. As can be seen on the map at the link below, the harvest is the most advanced in the Windsor area and regions nearby but has not yet begun in earnest across most of the rest of the province.
RealAgriculture agronomist Peter Johnson said in the latest edition of his podcast that early winter wheat yields – although not incredible – are trending better than average. However, he noted some poorer results of around 60 bu/acre on sandier ground, along with some concerns with test weights and greener straw.
Some fields are being harvested at slightly higher moisture levels and being dried to limit the chance of lodging or sprouts occurring, according to GFO.
