OMAFRA specialists say the provincial winter wheat crop continues to look excellent.
Some reports have been received about wheat leaves turning purple.
It’s thought to be a stress response to large fluctuations in air temperature or saturated soils.
However, the ministry says it’s not likely to hurt wheat yield and is expected to correct itself with warmer temperatures.
It’s estimated less than 1 per cent of the provincial corn crop has been planted so far.
OMAFRA expects a lot of corn will get planted near the end of this month into the first week of May.
Producers are reminded the highest yields for soybeans are obtained from early plantings.
By early, OMAFRA says generally the first 10 days of May.
Soybeans are more sensitive to soil temperature than corn.
And the ministry specialists point out glyphosate resistant Canada fleabane plants have been found in 30 Ontario counties.
