New Fact Sheet Addresses Changes in Procedures for Medicated Feed Distribution

Nov 09, 2018
A new fact sheet helps clarify changes in producers for the distribution of medicated feeds.
Effective December 1'st antimicrobials sold for veterinary use in Canada will require a prescription.
Health Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency have released a fact sheet "Selling Prescription Medicated Feed-Responsible use of Medically Important Antimicrobials for Veterinary Use."
Dr. Mary Jane Ireland, the Director General with the Veterinary Drugs Directorate with Health Canada, says this is one of several efforts to help stakeholders prepare.

Clip-Dr. Mary Jane Ireland-Health Canada:
The first fact sheet explains how prescription drugs can be accessed and sold and it provides information from the perspective of what this change will mean from the point of view from animal owners, drug companies, veterinarians, commercial feed mills, wholesalers and retail stores.
We've recently produced a second fact sheet in collaboration with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency on selling of prescription medicated feed.
This is a really detailed fact sheet that provides important information to commercial feed mills and medicated feed distributors.
It will help clarify the rules regarding the sale and distribution of prescription medicated feed specifically and it will be of particular interest to commercial feed mills, affiliated medicated feed distributors and shippers.
In preparing for this fact sheet we've worked in really close collaboration with the Animal Nutrition Association of Canada and others to make sure that it answers the questions that this particular group of stakeholders have.
You'll find this information in a couple of places including the Animal Nutrition Association of Canada's web site and the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association's web site.

Dr. Ireland says, thanks to vey close collaboration and partnership with stakeholders, there's a series of pamphlets, web sites, pod casts posters, a list of affected drugs, timelines for changes, articles and social media posts that are actively in distribution to inform and prepare for this change.
