ASF Prevention Tips for Pig Owners

The first of March marks National Pig Day, a time to appreciate pigs and their many contributions.

While celebrating these animals, it’s also essential to address a serious issue affecting them: African swine fever (ASF). This disease is a major threat to pigs and could have severe economic consequences. Here’s what you need to know to help keep pigs safe and thriving.

ASF is a highly contagious virus that affects both domestic and wild pigs. Although it does not harm humans or impact food safety, it is fatal for pigs. With no available cure or vaccine, prevention is the only way to stop its spread. The disease can be transmitted through contaminated clothing, vehicles, feed, and even insects like ticks.

While ASF has not yet entered the United States, its presence in the Caribbean raises concerns. If an outbreak occurs, it could halt pork production, disrupt exports, and lead to significant financial losses. That’s why pig owners, farmers, and even consumers must take precautions to prevent the disease from spreading.

Preventing ASF starts with strong biosecurity measures. Whether you raise pigs or simply visit farms, there are steps everyone can take:

  • Maintain Hygiene: Wash your hands and disinfect footwear before and after being near pigs.

  • Avoid Feeding Scraps: Never give pigs food waste, as it can carry harmful viruses.

  • Monitor Pig Health: Watch for symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, or skin lesions. If you notice anything unusual, contact local animal health authorities or the USDA at 866-536-7593.

  • Spread Awareness: Educate others about ASF prevention to ensure stronger protection for pigs.

National Pig Day is not just about appreciation—it’s also about ensuring the well-being of pigs. By adopting biosecurity practices and raising awareness, we can help safeguard these animals from ASF and other diseases. Let’s work together to protect pigs for future generations!
