Manitoba Harvest Down to Final 15%

Oct 09, 2024

Another week should just about put the finish on the 2024 Manitoba harvest.

The latest weekly crop report on Tuesday pegged the overall harvest in the province at 85% complete, up 12 points from a week earlier as most regions received less than 3 mm of rain.

The Central Region harvest advanced 13 points on the week to reach 94% complete, with the Southwest harvest also gaining 13 points to 82% done. The Northwest harvest was 77% complete, up from 61% a week earlier, while the Interlake harvest climbed 9 points to 82%. On the other hand, the Eastern Region harvest was static at 75% complete, although most crops there are completely in the bin, except for soybeans, corn and the last 10% of the canola.

On a provincewide basis, oats and barley are now 99% harvested, followed by spring wheat at 96%, canola at 94%, dry beans at 85%, soybeans at 70% and flax at 61%. Corn and sunflowers are estimated at 4% and 1% harvested, respectively.

Preliminary yield reports for corn are in the range of 140 to 240 bu/acre. High winds have contributed to some stem breakage, the report said.

Spring wheat yield estimates range from 40 to 95 bu/acre. Protein ranges from 10 to 15%.

Oat yield estimates range from 110 to 180 bu/acre.

Barley yield estimates range from 80 to 120 bu/acre.

Flax yields range from from 20 to 40 bu/acre.

Canola yields range from 25 to 65 bu/acre, with averages ranging from 30 to 45 bu/acre.

Dry bean yields estimated at 1700 to 2000 lbs/acre.

Soybean yields range from 35 to 60 bu/acre, and an average of 45 bu/acre.

Southwest:

Harvest continues this week, but windstorms and showers caused some delays over the weekend. There was little wind damage despite gusts reaching up to 95 km/h. Above-normal temperatures and low humidity have created excellent conditions for harvest progress and drying opportunities. Daytime highs have varied between 19.2°C and 26.1°C, while overnight lows have dropped to between -1.8°C and -7.3°C, resulting in heavy frost in some areas. This frost will help dry down the longer-season crops. Overall, 80% to 85% of the harvest is complete in the southwest region.

Northwest:

Despite cooler and wet conditions, harvest was still able to progress this week. The Northwest region received frost, with overnight lows ranging from -2°C to -7°C. The majority of the region had below zero temperatures for 10 to 13 hours. Precipitation slowed harvest for a couple of days in some areas, The Pas station received the most at 18.5 mm. Extreme winds hit the region once again over the weekend and some damage to canola was reported in the Dauphin area. Swathed canola was blown and standing canola was lodged.
