Latest Crop Report Shows Lag in Corn, Bean Harvest with First Glimpse at Winter Wheat Conditions

The United States Department of Agriculture released its latest Crop Progress Report on Monday, November 5, 2018 according to which both the US corn and soybean harvests are trailing moderately behind their respective historical average pace, with soybeans more so than corn. Cotton harvest, additionally, is trailing its normal pace slightly this week nationwide while sorghum harvest follows suit. Pasture and range conditions have fallen off of this report for the remainder of the year, though this report will give farmers their first look at winter wheat condition.

 

This week, corn harvest for the US has reached 76 percent complete, eight points above the progress made at this time last year but behind the average pace of harvest by one point. Harvest in traditional Corn Belt states like Illinois, Indiana and Iowa rate this week at 93 percent, 83 percent and 72 percent complete respectively.

 

Soybean harvest this week is also trailing its average pace of 89 percent for this time of year by 6 points at 83 percent complete currently. That is also 6 points behind this time last year as well. The “I” states show mixed progress in their soybean harvests at 92 percent, 87 percent and 88 percent complete respectively.

 

Meanwhile in cotton country, harvest has progressed another five points since last week’s report, now at 49 percent complete nationwide. That is behind the average pace of harvest by three points and behind last year’s pace by 4 points. Nationally, cotton bolls opening is at 94 percent this week, near 96 last year and 97 the average. Cotton’s condition for the week has deteriorated some since last week, but with only minor adjustments in its good to excellent quality rating of 35 percent last week to 33 percent this week.

 

Like all the other harvests going on currently, sorghum lags its normal pace at present coming in this week at 64 percent harvested falling short of last year’s 70 percent and the average of 76 percent. Nearly the entire US sorghum crop though has reached maturity this week at 97 percent, behind both last year and the average of 98 percent.

Winter wheat planted in Oklahoma reached 82 percent, down 7 points from the previous year. Winter wheat emerged reached 71 percent, down 6 points from the previous year. Winter wheat’s condition this week rates 9 percent poor to very poor, 56 fair and 35 percent good to excellent. Canola planted reached 70 percent. Canola emerged reached 41 percent, down 43 points from the previous year. Corn harvested reached 87 percent, down 2 points from the previous year and down 7 points from normal. Sorghum mature reached 93 percent, down 6 points from the previous year. Sorghum harvested reached 69 percent, up 1 point from the previous year. Cotton harvested reached 28 percent, down 11 points from the previous year and down 10 points from normal.
