It's Not Too Late For Weed Control

Oct 20, 2021

There's still time in the season for weed control.

That according to the province's weed specialist Kim Brown-Livingston.

"We've had some early harvest and there's still a few crops kicking around out there but generally there's been a lot of weed control done but we still are having some really great weather for weed control," she said. "We need there to be some weeds that are still actively growing, in order for them to take up the herbicide that we're spraying and we've still got that going on, so there is still time this fall to get some spraying done if that's what the plan is."

She says weeds of concern right now are perennials and winter-annuals.

"I think we're seeing a flush of weed growth that we just didn't see earlier on in the year because it was too dry. I don't really know if it's different than normal. It's just we're seeing a lot of weed growth now because they've got this bit of moisture."

Brown-Livingston adds after a hard frost, farmers should assess the weeds to see if they're still growing.

She encourages farmers to get rid of the weeds this fall in order to preserve moisture for next year.
