The 2023 International Congress of Meat Science and Technology was held in Padova, Italy, August 21-25. Five hundred delegates from six continents attended. The Congress featured a pre-conference intensive workshop for graduate students and postdoctoral scholars and five days of technical programming. There were eighteen keynote lectures during the Congress, nearly fifty presentations during the plenary sessions, and 434 poster presentations.
Eighty scientists and students from the USA attended, including ISU’s Elisabeth Huff-Lonergan, Rodrigo Tarté, Steven Lonergan, Sarah Bludau, and Logan Johnson. Dr. Tarté was a co-author on four poster presentations, including two posters co-authored with ISU meat science graduate students Rachel Crowley and Sarah Bludau. Steven Lonergan served on the Congress scientific planning committee, presented a lecture in the pre-conference graduate student workshop, and chaired a keynote session. Steven will start his twelfth year as the USA representative to the Congress Secretariat this year. A highlight of the Congress was Elisabeth
Lonergan’s keynote presentation emphasizing accomplishments and prospects for proteomic technologies to improve meat production. An accompanying proceedings paper was published in the Italian Journal of Animal Science. Logan Johnson presented a poster (with co-authors Steven and Elisabeth Lonergan) entitled “A novel machine learning approach for predicting pork tenderness using tryptic peptides from distinct protein fractions” . Logan’s efforts earned a second place finish in the student poster competition, which included over fifty students from six continents. Congratulations to Logan!
