Hog genetics supported

Canada's hog industry is getting some financial help to boost international recognition of purebred genetics.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada's AgriMarketing Program, is providing $1 million to the Canadian Swine Exporters Association. The federal government says the funds will help members increase awareness of the value and quality of Canadian hogs by participating in key international trade shows and targeted trade missions. Funds will also ensure Canada remains a world leader in hog genetics, particularly in attributes that improve meat quality, feed efficiency, environmental issues and biosecurity.

Gordon Waters, vice-president of the Canadian Swine Exporters Association says the goal of the group is to develop new global markets.

"The exporting activity, through the members of Canadian Swine Exporters Association, keeps our swine industry viable and creates jobs for Canadians," Waters says, noting purebred genetics are already exported around the globe.

The federal government states Canada is the third-largest pork exporter in the world, with sales of over $3.6 billion to more than 100 countries.
