Demand and Sales Activity

The all grade hay price from all markets was slightly weaker compared to the previous report . There was little upward movement in price with weak demand and a large supply of hay .

For Nebraska , prices were steady for all forms of hay this week . Wet and snowy weather caused a sudden halt to field work including moving hay .

For Iowa , no prime hay was offered this week at auction. Hay from storage is lower quality and lower price. There was some organic hay offered this week with little demand as most organic producers are satisfied feeding the ir own hay supply.

In South Dakota , light test of the market, with steady to weak price . Weather has been an issue this past week as wet weather may have decreased interest in purchasing hay.

For Missouri, light market acti vity was brought to a temporary halt with areas receiving up to 6 inches of rain this week. The bad, is it deters hay buyers at the auction, the good; the lower 2/3 of the state is no longer listed on the drought monitor.

In Southwest Minnesota, sales o f only lower quality hay this week , no prime quality hay offered at auction this week .

For Illinois, no published reports this week .

In Wisconsin , lower quality hay is plentiful and the overall hay price is reflecting a big supply . There ha s been interest in small lots of hay from small livestock producers and hobbyist at local auctions. The Midwest straw market was slightly weaker compared to the last report . Market price for s mall square bale averaged $ 3 . 2 0 a bale (range of $ 1 . 0 0 to $6.00) . Large square bale straw price was down about $ 1 .00 per bale , with an average price of $ 3 1 . 0 0 per bale (range of $ 2 0 . 00 to $ 4 1 .00); and large round bale straw price declined considerably this week as more was available at auction and price decre ase d with a greater supply , av erage price was $ 26 .00 per bale ( range of $ 13 .00 - $ 46 .00 per bale ) .
