Harvest Starts Early In Parts Of Southwest Saskatchewan; Yields Expected To Be Poor

Jul 26, 2017

Harvest has started earlier than normal in the southwest part of Saskatchewan because of extremely dry conditions and yields are not expected to be very good.

Swift Current regional crop specialist Kale Wilson says some early peas have been harvested and yields will suffer from a lack of rain.

“But I can’t imagine them being very good,” Wilson said. “Average might be the best people are looking for right now. There’s not even enough moisture.”

He says a few drought-stressed, early seeded fields have been combined.

“Well, they are very, very dry,” Wilson said. “Harvest has started on some of the peas. Everything is just really dry and hurting for moisture.”
