Grain Farmers of Ontario Applauds Provincial Budget’s Continued Support for Risk Management Program

May 21, 2025

Guelph, ON – – Grain Farmers of Ontario, the province’s largest commodity organization, representing Ontario’s 28,000 barley, corn, oat, soybean, and wheat farmers, welcomes the government of Ontario’s 2025 budget commitment to the Risk Management Program (RMP) and investments in protecting Ontario from tariff impacts.

The budget outlines investments in Ontario to build resilience and self-reliance in addition to reaffirming a $100 million increase to the RMP and the Self-Directed Risk Management Program (SDRM) over the next three years.

“We are pleased to see this government’s ongoing investments in keeping Ontario’s grain farmers competitive. Grain farms are rural economic engines and are essential to building a resilient and self-reliant economy in Ontario,” said Jeff Harrison, Chair of Grain Farmers of Ontario. “We look forward to working alongside Premier Doug Ford, Minister of Finance Peter Bethlenfalvy, and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Agribusiness Trevor Jones to advance federal policy and investments that help ensure the growth of Ontario grains and oilseeds.”

With global uncertainty escalating, the Ontario Risk Management Program remains one of the most important tools to support farm businesses in planning ahead.

“Global trade uncertainty is a concern for every farmer in Ontario. Investments in the RMP program and rural infrastructure including road, marine traffic, and internet as outlined in the budget are important in ensuring grain farmers in Ontario can continue to feed people within the province and around the world,” said Crosby Devitt, CEO of Grain Farmers of Ontario. “The increase to the RMP program will help grain farmers of Ontario remain competitive.”

Grain Farmers of Ontario looks forward to working with the provincial government on programs and priorities that support a thriving grain farming industry for Ontario.
