Good Outlook For Winter Wheat Crops In Saskatchewan This Year

May 02, 2017

Winter wheat crops across Saskatchewan are heading into spring in good condition in most areas.

Some winter wheat crops were lost to flooding this spring in low lying areas in the southeast according to the chair of the Saskatchewan Winter Cereals Development Commission.

Dale Hicks says winter wheat area has been in a gradual decline but he expects a rebound this fall because winter wheat is less susceptible to fusarium damage than durum:

“One they finally realize they’re never going to grow good quality durum again,” said Hicks, “they’ll be looking  for alternative. I think you’ll see an increase in winter wheat acres this fall.”
