OTTAWA – The Office of the Grocery Sector Code of Conduct (OGSCC), made up of ten organizations including the Fruit and Vegetable Growers of Canada (FVGC), has gained the support of all grocers and key suppliers for the Grocery Code of Conduct. This significant development marks a major milestone in the ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and fair dealing practices between suppliers and retailers in Canada.
The Grocery Code of Conduct, initiated by a working group of federal, provincial, and territorial ministers of agriculture in 2021, was designed to establish a more fair and equitable system within the grocery sector. The steering committee, comprising small, medium, and large enterprises—including retailers, manufacturers, distributors, wholesalers, processors, and producers—has been dedicated to fostering a collaborative and transparent supply chain environment. FVGC has been a member of the steering committee since its inception.
“The commitment of all grocers to the Grocery Code of Conduct is a testament to the progress we’ve made in advocating for a fairer system,” said Marcus Janzen, President of FVGC. “We are very pleased that all major retailers have now come together to support this initiative.”
The Grocery Code of Conduct is crucial for ensuring growers receive fair compensation for their work, enabling them to continue producing high-quality, nutritious produce for Canadians. This initiative is designed to enhance efficiency, maintain competitive prices for consumers, and address issues such as payment terms and contract fairness.
“The participation of all major retailers, including Loblaw, Metro, Sobeys, Walmart and Costco, strengthens the sustainability and viability of our entire food system,” said Patrice Léger Bourgoin, FVGC’s representative on the Grocery Code of Conduct Interim Board of Directors. “We are delighted to see the industry unite for the benefit of all stakeholders and Canadians.”
FVGC remains committed to working with all parties to ensure the successful implementation and adherence to this Code.
The Fruit and Vegetable Growers of Canada (FVGC) represents growers across the country involved in the production of over 120 different types of crops on over 14,000 farms, with a farm gate value of $6.8 billion in 2022. FVGC is an Ottawa-based voluntary, not-for-profit, national association, and, since 1922, has advocated on important issues that impact Canada’s fresh produce sector, promoting healthy, safe, and sustainable food, ensuring the continued success and growth of the industry.
