If you are a farmer located in the Western Lake Erie Basin, you are eligible for cost-share up to $15,000 to try new and enhanced nutrient management practices.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Grant and the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) are providing funds for farmers located in the Western Lake Erie Basin to implement new nutrient management practices. Those funds will be available on a first come, first serve basis, so start your application as soon as you can.

This program will provide cost-share for farmers to try new and enhanced practices such as: grid/zone sampling, variable rate application (self- or custom application) or subsurface placement; and yield monitor calibration and evaluation of nutrient management with Michigan State University Extension and equipment that will assist with nutrient placement (nitrogen or phosphorus), subsurface placement or yield monitoring.

For example, if you are interested in grid/zone sampling, you will be entitled to up to $7 per acre; if you decide to work with MSU Extension allowing us to calibrate your yield monitor, you will be eligible to $7 per acre. If you are interested in buying a piece of new equipment that will improve your nutrient management practices, you will eligible to a 50 percent cost-share up to $15,000.
