Jennifer Bentley, dairy specialist with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, recently produced a new publication about automatic dairy feeding systems. “Healthy dairy replacements are critical to a farm’s overall profitability and sustainability,” said Bentley.
“Designing An Automatic Feeding System” presents high-tech, low-maintenance alternatives to dairy producers who are raising calves on the farm. This four-page publication covers everything from converting an existing building to considerations for a new computer-controlled barn design, including examples of pen layouts.
The focus of the publication, which was funded by a Risk Management Education grant, is two-fold: to assist calf raisers in evaluating their current practices and potential new calf housing and feeding systems; and to enhance management skills to operate these systems successfully.
