Dry Pea Acres Ease Slightly from Intentions; Other Pulse Crops Higher

Canadian producers slightly reduced 2025 dry pea planted area from original intentions, but stepped up acres for most other pulse crops, Statistics Canada’s acreage report on Friday showed. 

Dry pea area for 2025 was reported at 3.503 million acres, down only slightly from the federal agency’s March estimate of 3.516 million. That is still 9.1% higher on the year and the highest since 2021 when 3.854 million acres were planted.  

On the other hand, lentil planted area was pegged at 4.379 million acres, up from intentions of 4.174 million and an increase of 4% from last year.  

Pea acres easily topped the average pre-report trade guess of 3.1 million while lentil area also beat the average trade expectation of 4.2 million. 

Flax area increased to 619,800 acres from March intentions of just 448,000, which would have been the lowest since 1949. Instead, flax acres are now the highest since 2022 at 778,900 acres. 

At 359,600 acres, mustard acres climbed from March intentions of just 289,000 but remain 40.6% below the 606,300 acres planted in 2024. Canary area increased to 319,400 acres from 231,700 in March and is now above 290,900 in 2024. 

StatsCan reported chickpea acres at 541,000 acres, compared to intentions of 453,000 and last year’s 480,500. Dry bean acres increased to 382,100 from the March estimate of 357,200 but remain down from 402,300 a year ago. 

Sunflower acres jumped to 73,900 acres from just 58,500 in March and are now above the 60,000 planted last year.
