Don't Seed Canola Too Deep

May 17, 2018

Canola seeding is progressing at a rapid pace across Manitoba.

Angela Brackenreed, agronomist with the Canola Council of Canada, had some advice regarding seeding depth.

"Generally speaking we don't recommend going any deeper than that inch to chase moisture," she said. "The deeper that little canola seed has to come from, the more vulnerable it becomes to seedling diseases and then flea beetles once it is finally up."

Brackenreed reminds producers that they should be getting about three weeks of protection from their seed treatment insecticide. She adds flea beetles need to take a bite to ingest the insecticide, adding striped flea beetles are more tolerant to it.
