Delayed Harvest Impacting Canola

Sep 27, 2019
Canola is one crop that could be impacted by the delay in harvest.

Dane Froese is the oilseed specialist with Manitoba Agriculture.

"There can be some quality concerns," he said. "If canola is left in swath it's going to take longer for that swath to dry out and be harvested. There's a greater risk of moisture absorption from that seed or sprouting happening in that swath as well as shelling out. If the crop is left standing, generally there's greater windflow through that canopy. Harvest operations can resume slightly ahead of when you might move into a swathed canola field."

Froese says the canola crop has been mature for some time, so there is not much risk of green seed developing. However, the risk of sprouting and shelling out losses is greater.
