NMPF Experts Share Progress and Lessons Learned from Bird Flu Response
Dairy farmers have significantly improved their defenses against the H5N1 bird flu virus, according to experts from the National Milk Producers Federation (NMPF). In a recent Dairy Defined podcast, leaders shared updates on biosecurity and ongoing research efforts.
“We’re still learning things about the virus and how it’s being transmitted from farm to farm, and we still need some answers on that, but hang in there, we’re going to get through this,” said Dr. Jamie Jonker, NMPF’s chief science officer. “I do believe we’re going to eliminate the virus from the U.S. dairy cattle population. I think it’s just a matter of when, not if.”
Since the virus was first detected in cattle in March 2024, over 1,000 dairy herds have been impacted. Still, areas where eradication has succeeded and the virus’s stability within cattle populations offer hope.
Dr. Meggan Hain, NMPF’s chief veterinary officer, stressed that biosecurity remains critical to controlling the outbreak. She highlighted the resources available through the National Dairy FARM Program, which guides farmers in maintaining strong herd health practices.
