Dairy Farmers Of NL Say USMCA Significantly Changes Industry Framework

Oct 04, 2018

The Dairy Farmers of Newfoundland and Labrador are adding their voice to the assessment of the new USMCA – the trade deal to replace NAFTA – on how it will affect local dairy farmers.

Dairy Farmers of NL says the deal has proposed some significant changes to the framework under which Canadian dairy farmers have operated over the last number of years.

That includes the allowance of greater volumes of imported American dairy products, a limitation of dairy export opportunities and the elimination of a class of milk designed to responsibly use oversupply of skim milk powder.

Dairy Farmers of NL says while the implications to these changes for the province are not yet fully known, the importance of supply management to the province’s food security is widely recognized.

They say along with the provincial government, they are monitoring the situation closely and stand with fellow dairy producers across the country in voicing their concern.
