With spring field operations in full swing, farmers who do not have the capital or time may be looking at hiring a custom operator. For others, doing the work for others may be a way to spread their machinery fixed costs over more acres, reducing per unit costs and increasing cash flow. The most frequently asked questions are “what should I pay?” or “how much do I charge?” Dean Dyck, farm business management specialist with Alberta Agriculture, says knowing your costs is critical when determining costs.
