Correction: Ontario Winter Wheat Area Planted in the Fall Up from a Year Ago

Ontario winter wheat area planted in the fall for harvest in 2025 is higher than a year ago. 

Statistics Canada’s crop production report last week pegged fall planted wheat for harvest next year at 1.183 million acres, a 17.3% increase over the 1.008 million acres that were planted in the fall of 2023 for harvest in 2024. 

A story that appeared here a day earlier used incorrect numbers to suggest that despite an early soybean harvest and excellent fall planting conditions, winter wheat growers in the province planted almost 9% fewer acres this past fall. 

The correct acreage estimate means Ontario winter wheat area planted in the fall would be the highest since 2021 when 1.187 million went into the ground. 

With the larger acreage for Ontario – the top winter wheat production province – national winter wheat seeded area in the fall amounts to 1.687 million acres, a 15% increase from the 1.466 million acres planted in the fall for harvest in 2024. 

Manitoba fall seeded winter wheat area for 2025 is estimated at 39,800 acres, down from 42,800 a year earlier, while Saskatchewan producers planted 130,200 acres, compared to 102,200 the previous year. Alberta fall planted winter wheat for harvest in 2025 is estimated at 200,800 acres, up from 189,300 last year.
