Canadian 4-H leaders, teachers, other educators invited to Uganda

Apr 03, 2018

Canadian Foodgrains Bank is inviting applications for its youth educator’s tour to Uganda in August 2018.

Tour participants will meet people who have experienced hunger firsthand, learn about the root causes and impacts of hunger, and learn about efforts to respond to the different kinds of hunger.

“Our goal is to provide Canadian teachers with rich firsthand learning experiences in Uganda they can bring back with them to their classrooms and students,” says Roberta Gramlich, Foodgrains Bank youth engagement coordinator.

“Global hunger is an issue that’s distant for most Canadians. Allowing teachers to interact and actually meet and spend time with people who have experienced hunger helps to bridge those two worlds,” she adds.

“Teachers who have gone on previous tours have told us they know they will draw on what they used for the rest of their careers.”

Topics to be explored include food security, humanitarian assistance, Canada’s role in the world, international development, and global citizenship.

All tours include an orientation where participants learn about the Foodgrains Bank, and a full cultural briefing.

Anyone who is an educator of children, youth or young adults is welcome to apply for the tour. This includes but is not limited to school teachers, 4-H leaders, youth pastors, and others.

Cost of the tour will be approximately $2,800 and includes airfare and all in-country costs. Approximate dates are August 2-17. There is some opportunity for financial support for the trip upon request. The application deadline for the tour is May 15, 2018.
