Building relationships and getting a lay of the land were the main purposes of a two-day visit to Saskatchewan by the new federal agriculture minister.

Heath MacDonald from Prince Edward Island was joined by Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison on stops to farms in the Regina, Indian Head and Davidson areas.

MacDonald said it’s a new, fresh start for the Liberal Party with a new leader.

“We want to ensure that we put an economic lens on our decisions that are being made to ensure that everybody is sustainable and prosperous,” he said. “We will not always agree on all the issues, but certainly we need to be sure that we’re trying to do the right thing.”

MacDonald said If we want to be the strongest economy in the G7, we can’t do it without farmers.

“A very strict directive from the Prime Minister to ensure that we communicate and engage in our sectors and our industries, that we’re responsible for,” he added.

Macdonald also added international trade, and tariffs were mentioned by all farmers he spoke to.
