About 130 people attended the 6th Annual Edible Bean Meeting held Thursday in Altona.
Another meeting is being held Friday in Portage la Prairie.
Organizer Dennis Lange talked about the interest in growing edible beans.
"There's always a core group of growers in Altona, Carman, and also up in Portage, and Treherne, all these areas. You get your long term bean growers that have it in the rotation," he said. "It sounds like recently there's been some movement in prices. They sound a little bit more attractive, growers are looking for a few different options. We had a bout 155,000 acres seeded this year and just with the turnout here, I'm thinking maybe 130,000 maybe even a little higher. Usually if we have a few more people we might be in that 135,000 range. Down from last year, which is kind of expected, but maybe a little stronger than what I was initially thinking for acres for next year."
Lange, who serves as the province's pulse specialist, says some edible bean varieties could be in short supply this upcoming year.
