Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) has launched a new round of consultations, beginning with the release of a discussion document on how to help Canada achieve its national target to reduce absolute greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with fertilizer by 30 per cent below 2020 levels by 2030. The document is part of consultations with industry to help reach that goal.
Last year, AAFC met with producer groups and provincial and territorial partners to discuss the target and initiate conversations on how to work to develop a realistic approach. Stakeholders identified key opportunities and challenges for industry, which help inform the document that will stimulate discussion and lead to a shared understanding of how to meet the reduction target.
The document is available now for comment until June 3. In the coming months, AAFC will be hosting virtual discussions for participants to continue the conversation.
The primary concern with fertilizers is nitrous oxide emissions, particularly those associated with synthetic nitrogen fertilizer use. Such emissions have grown significantly. Canada’s overall goal is to decrease GHG emissions by 40 to 45 per cent by 2030. Suggestions and solutions for farmers include an expansion of Fertilizer Canada’s 4R Nutrient Stewardship program, as well as investments in new programs through the Agriculture Climate Solutions – Living Labs initiative, the On-Farm Climate Action Fund and more.
