2024 W.R. Motherwell Award presented to Komie Hossini of Calgary, Alberta

Outstanding Young Farmer (OYF) previous sponsor representative for Bayer Crop Science, from Calgary, Alberta, Komie Hossini, was honoured as recipient of the 2024 W.R. Motherwell Award by Canada's OYF program. The award was presented to Komie at the National Event held in Lethbridge, AB November 29, 2024.

Komie defines his Communications Business Partner position on LinkedIn as focusing on activities when enables Bayer to have greater, more positive relationships with its partners. It includes strategic leadership council, PR, social responsibilities, product promotions, sponsorship, events, issue management, media relations, agriculture advocacy, and building relations.

Through his tenure with COYF, Komie has fulfilled all those activities helping to make the program stronger over the last twelve years. He has held the following positions while involved in COYF.

       Attended National events
       Attended strategic planning sessions in 2013 & 2018
Board member as Sponsor Rep 2016-2018
       Attended board meetings and communicated with other sponsors
Social Media Committee 2020-present
       Provided support and guidance for the Program’s move into social media

       Advice on media partners, media proposals, issues that arose

Komie also contributes to the Canadian agricultural sector through his involvement with 4-H, and the Youth Ag Summit.

Together with his wife, Diana they enjoy their family time. When not working, you will find Komie playing soccer, mountain climbing or trail running.

Amy Cronin, Incoming Canada’s OYF President, and Sylvain Gascon, a fellow COYF alumni, presented the award.

Dr. Motherwell, the namesake of the W.R. Motherwell Award, was born near Perth, Ontario in 1860. His leadership in Canadian agriculture spanned more than 50 years and he is regarded by many as the "grand old man of Canadian agriculture." His career highlights include minister of agriculture in Saskatchewan's first provincial government, and minister of agriculture for Canada in the 1920s. Having attended agricultural college in Guelph, Ontario, his move to Saskatchewan resulted in his instrumental role in establishing the agriculture facility at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Motherwell died in 1943 at the age of 83.

On the 25th anniversary of the OYF program, the W.R. Motherwell Award was established. The award is presented annually, on behalf of OYF alumni across Canada, to an individual or couple who has demonstrated excellence in leadership and dedication to both the OYF program and Canadian agriculture.

Celebrating 44 years, Canada's Outstanding Young Farmers' program is an annual competition to recognize farmers that exemplify excellence in their profession and promote the tremendous contribution of agriculture. Open to participants 18 to 39 years of age, making the majority of income from on-farm sources, participants are selected from seven regions across Canada, with two national winners chosen each year.
