There are more choices than ever for farmers looking to select seed varieties for next year.
A helpful tool is the Seed Manitoba 2020 Variety Selection Guide, which is now available.
Anastasia Kubinec is the Manager of Crop Industry Development with Manitoba Agriculture.
"There are always new varieties," she said. "It is great. Issues that we have had with lodging tolerance, we now have wheat varieties and other cereal varieties that are much better for lodging tolerance. When it comes to diseases like clubroot in canola, if you look in the guide, we have a very specific listing of which varieties have clubroot tolerance. The plant breeders have done an amazing job of figuring out the traits that we do need for Manitoba, integrating that into those varieties through genetics and through selections. Every year we have something that's just a bit better."
