Agriculturally speaking, farmers are always interested in knowing what crops should be grown next season to maximize profitability chances. But what about the long term?

The University of Guelph is presenting a forum at the upcoming Royal Agricultural Winter Fair that examines the future of food and agriculture.

This year, the Fair –the largest of its kind—celebrates its 100th anniversary on November 4-13, 2022 in Toronto, under the theme “A Century of Champions”.

For the fifth year in a row, the University of Guelph is the Fair’s official education and foundational partner and will host an educational symposium and exhibit that will include the debut of a university-produced film called The Future of Food. It will premiere on November 4 @ 4PM.

The U of G exhibit will present how researchers are tackling the challenges of global issues such as supply chain disruptions, climate change, soil health, and food security to better ensure people have safe and healthy food now and in the future.

The exhibit will provide visitors with an in-person experience showing seeds from space, a soil monolith, 3-D-printed items, bees, yeast, and more.

Along with a history of food, the exhibit will highlight the school’s partnership with the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), and provide details on the importance of One Health--a collaborative, multisectoral, and transdisciplinary approach working at the local, regional, national, and global levels to achieve optimal health outcomes recognizing the interconnection between people, animals, plants, and their shared environment.

An education symposium will also take place on November 10, 10:30AM – 3PM where faculty and staff from the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC) will welcome career and guidance counselors, educators, and high school students to the Growth Hub Stage, the fair’s main programming location.
