The federal ag and transport ministers mandated in March 2018 that Canadian National and Canadian Pacific railways publish plans on how to clear the grain backlog in Western Canada.

Both rail companies made promises to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in equipment and personnel upgrades.

Some farmers in Alberta, however, are concerned that oil transportation will take priority over grain.
