Farm Jobs Get Immigration Boost
Canada’s agriculture industry is facing serious labour shortages. To resolve this issue, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) is working on a new immigration stream that will help bring international workers into this essential sector.
The Agri-Food Pilot, which previously supported foreign workers in agriculture jobs, closed in February 2025 after reaching its application limit. This left many employers and workers looking for new options. The new stream aims to provide a more stable, long-term solution.
This new program is expected to launch between 2025 and 2026. It will focus on jobs in agriculture (as well as fish processing) and offer a sector-specific work permit. The program will be developed in partnership with Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). It also includes plans for partnerships with certain countries to make hiring easier and fairer.
The goal is not just to bring in more workers. It is also to support Canada's economy, manage temporary resident levels, and meet job market needs. The program may also open doors for permanent residency in the future.
