WeedSeeker 2 Delivers Precision Spot Spraying with Smart Control

Infrared Based System Targets Weeds and Maps Spray Coverage

WeedSeeker 2, developed by PTx Trimble, is a modern spot spraying solution that combines accuracy with speed to improve weed control on farms. 

It is an ISOBUS-based system that uses reflectivity technology, known as NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), to identify and spray weeds in real time. 

Commonly referred to as a “green-on-brown” system, WeedSeeker 2 operates using an infrared light that shines onto the ground. The system detects the difference between weeds and bare soil, allowing it to only spray where weeds are present. 

Farms.com recently connected with Lou Ziebert with PTx Trimble to learn more about this technology. 

Ziebert explained that the system can target and spray a weed as small as three-quarters of an inch in diameter, even at speeds up to 25 miles per hour. 

The system works best when mounted 31 to 36 inches above the ground and supports row spacings between 15 and 20 inches. It integrates seamlessly with Trimble’s PIQ software and GFX displays, which allow farmers to map exactly where spraying has occurred.  

This mapping feature, along with section control, prevents the sprayer from respraying treated areas and provides an overview of weed pressure across the field. 

Operation is managed through soft keys on any ISOBUS universal terminal capable monitor. The Trimble ISOBUS ECU (Electronic Control Unit) serves as the system’s central controller, connecting and coordinating all spray sensors. 

WeedSeeker 2 not only enhances precision but also reduces herbicide use and operational costs by eliminating unnecessary spraying. The data collected also supports better field management and planning.
