Survey gathers hog inventories and pig crop information nationwide
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will soon begin data collection for its quarterly Hogs and Pigs Survey. This survey helps measure the condition of the U.S. pork industry and provides important information to producers, analysts, and agribusinesses.
Farmers will be asked to provide details on their market hog and breeding stock inventories, farrowing intentions, and the most recent pig crop. The information helps track trends in the pork sector throughout the year.
Survey forms will be mailed to producers in late August. Participants may complete the survey online, by mail, or by fax. If producers do not respond, NASS will follow up by phone or personal interview.
“Through the quarterly surveys, NASS measures and reports conditions and trends in the U.S. pork industry over the course of the year,” said NASS Livestock Branch Chief Travis Averill. “The quarterly hog surveys enable NASS to provide pork producers, analysts, agribusinesses, and others, the data they need to make sound and timely business decisions.”
