U.S. PED Virus Outbreak Traced Back to China
By Amanda Brodhagen, Farms.comVeterinary scientists have found that the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea (PED) virus outbreak which has been spreading across hog farms in U.S. states since May has been traced back to the Chinese province of Anhui.Researchers from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech have traced back what they believe are the origins, and possible evolution, of the PED virus that’s been responsible for high mortality rates in swine herds.It was found that the three U.S. strains of the virus are related to the Chinese strains of PEDV. China had an outbreak of the virus about three years ago. There is currently no vaccine to treat or prevent PEDV.
