Regenerative farming skills for a greener future

In a significant development during National Apprenticeship Week, Serve Colorado has launched a new apprenticeship aimed at promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

This Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) in regenerative farm management is designed to prepare aspiring farmers in both regenerative and hydroponic agricultural methods.

The program is supported by a Scale Up Grant from the State of Colorado and is a collaborative effort involving local experts and institutions, with Mountain Roots Food Project playing a pivotal role.

Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera emphasized the dual focus of the apprenticeship on career preparation and sustainable farming techniques, combining practical training with AmeriCorps service to create a comprehensive learning experience.

Apprentices will start their training in early 2025, benefiting from a detailed curriculum that includes 2,000 hours of hands-on training and 144 hours of classroom instruction, guided by seasoned farmers.

Highlighting the depth of the program, Susan Wyman of Gunnison Gardens said, "The Registered Apprenticeship offers credentials, credibility, and commitment to learning 52 core competencies that a regenerative farm manager will need. I'm prepared to teach everything I know about farming and marketing to help young farmers, to invest in careers in agriculture."

For those interested in sustainable agriculture and community service, the Mountain Roots Healthy Futures webpage provides detailed application information. This program promises to nurture competent farm managers and strengthen Colorado's agricultural workforce.
