Statistics Canada reports that honey production is up by 14 per cent compared to 2011. Beekeepers success can largely be attributed to a higher yield. The numbers are up 3.5 pounds per bee colony from last year’s figures. While better yields help contribute to the higher honey production, there were also more beekeepers managing colonies – almost 11 per cent more compared to 2011. The national total for honey production is 90.9 million pounds, with Alberta leading the way as the top honey producing province with 40.5 million pounds of honey produced in 2012.
