Boozman advocates for peanut growers with new legislation

Senator John Boozman, the Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee, has released a framework for the 2024 Farm Bill tailored to support the U.S. Peanut Federation's top priorities.

This framework focuses on maintaining the Price Loss Coverage (PLC) program, increasing the reference prices in line with production cost hikes since the 2018 Farm Bill, and implementing a voluntary base update.

The proposed changes reflect direct input from peanut growers, shellers, and buying points across the country, emphasizing the increased costs of production and other challenges such as labor shortages and trade barriers.

Senator Boozman has actively engaged with the peanut community, ensuring that the legislative framework addresses their specific needs.

The U.S. Peanut Federation has endorsed Boozman's proposal, highlighting its potential to sustain the farming community by adjusting the reference price to mirror the real cost increases and by facilitating the inclusion of new farmers through voluntary base updates. These adjustments are seen as essential for maintaining the economic viability of peanut farming in the U.S.

By focusing on these key areas, the 2024 Farm Bill framework aims to bolster the agricultural sector's resilience, especially for peanut producers who have faced significant economic pressures in recent years.

This legislative effort underscores a commitment to supporting rural economies and ensuring that agricultural policies remain responsive to the needs of American farmers.
